Based on her scholarship at UNCW, Renée was competitively chosen as one of sixteen professors from NC universities to travel to Chile on a Fulbright Grant. In 2007, the university extended additional support for Renée, students and professionals to return to Chile to shoot, La Apuesta, a narrative short film based on her research. The genesis of this film came from the story of a 17th century noblewoman known as Quintrala, who became the richest landowner in Chilean history. Curiously, she continually escaped blame for her “disappearing” husbands and her beaten slaves who possessed shamanistic powers. Before she was burned at the stake as a witch, she sought revenge by giving her wealth and land to the Catholic Church so that 25,000 masses would be said for her soul’s salvation. Currently, the film is in post-production. She and her company, ReneAissance Productions, have devised a technologically innovative international film project partnering with the University of North Carolina, Wilmington; The Universidad de Católica in Valparaíso, Chile and film support companies in the USA, such as Joe Dunton Camera International Inc. (now Wilmington Camera) Legion Films, Cine Partners, and other grant support agencies. The project will be taken to 35mm and shown to South and North American film festivals supportive of the partnership between the Americas.
